The Lancaster District and Music Department

Lancaster, with a population of 40,000, is located on US 33, twenty-five miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio.  The Lancaster City School District Lancaster has a total enrollment of 6,700 in grades K-12 with 700 students participating in the instrumental music program in grades 7-12.  The district is comprised of nine elementary schools, two junior high schools, one freshman school and one high school. Lancaster High School

Instrumental music begins in grade 5 with band instruments.  Students have the opportunity to play in one of two fifth grade bands and one of two sixth grade bands based on their respective junior high school.  Beginning band members are taught by specialists on their respective instruments, with the music faculty containing one percussion, two woodwind and two brass specialists.  One half hour lesson per week is offered to students in the fifth and sixth grades, in addition to the full band experience.

At the junior high level, students may perform in one of two bands at each junior high based on grade level, and a jazz band at General Sherman Junior High School.  The freshman program provides one concert band and one jazz ensemble in which students may participate.

The Lancaster High School Music Department serves the needs of over 140 instrumental music students in grades 10-12 with a wide range of course offerings.  Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Music Theory and History are all part of the school curriculum.  Students are selected for Concert or Symphonic Band by audition.  In addition, there are a number of extracurricular activities and groups that are offered to interested students who wish to further their skills and develop in the area of music; they include Percussion Ensemble, the "Swinging Gales," Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band and a variety of chamber ensembles.
