Text Box: Welcome!!!

Lancaster, with a population of almost 40,000, is located on US 33, twenty-five miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio.  The Lancaster City School District has a total enrollment of nearly 6,000 in grades K-12 with 600 students participating in the instrumental music program in grades 5-12.  The district is comprised of eight elementary schools, two junior high schools, and one high school.

Instrumental music begins at the start of the second semester in grade 5 with band instruments.  Beginning band members are taught by specialists on their respective instruments, with an elementary instrumental music faculty containing one percussion, one woodwind and one brass specialist.  One half hour lesson per week is offered to students in the fifth grade at their school during the school day.

At the junior high level, students may participate in one of three bands based upon grade level.  At the sixth grade level, students are taught in brass, woodwind, and percussion classes.  Sixth grade students also begin playing together as a collective concert ensemble and perform their first concert in the spring.  Sixth grade band meets every day of the week.  The seventh and eighth grade bands also meet daily, but as a full ensemble.  These bands perform several times a year, including a performance at halftime of the fall Sherman / Ewing football game, a school holiday concert, and a school spring concert.  Band students in the seventh and eighth grades also have the option of participating in an annual solo and ensemble adjudicated event.

The Lancaster High School Instrumental Music Department serves the needs of over 140 instrumental music students in grades 9-12 with a wide range of course offerings.  Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band are all part of the school curriculum.  Students are selected for the three concert ensembles by audition.  In addition, there are a number of extracurricular ensembles that are offered to interested students who wish to further their skills and develop in the area of music, including Percussion Ensemble, the Swinging Gales, Pep Band, a variety of chamber ensembles and Color Guard.

In appreciation for its strong community support, the Lancaster Bands can be seen regularly throughout the Lancaster community at numerous parades and concerts. In addition to many performances by the Band of Gold, various chamber ensembles add many additional performances to the band's performance schedule. The Lancaster Band program is fortunate to be supported by the Lancaster community, loyal alumni, many corporate sponsors, and by the Lancaster Band Boosters.
